ten lovely memories

26 06 2010

Oh, Summer. You are very humid, uncomfortably hot, and we still love you. The past week has mostly slipped by without stopping here, but here are ten lovelies that made us laugh, smile, and play.

1. father’s day

We were up early on Father’s Day and found a sudden change of schedule. Oh, opportunity! Mountain-bound!

father's day hike

We journeyed into the Shenandoah Mountains for a day of chasing butterflies, nibbling tasty treats, and hiking in the woods.

2. summer woods

3. cucumber mint soup

A perfect bit of summer soup from an adorable cafe in Gordonsville, VA.

4. Weekend Sewing (by Heather Ross)

I am in craft-love with this book.

huck pants - wip

In progress right now: Huck Finn pants for Bebe (pictured above), plus a tunic and summer dress for Mama.

5. double birthday pool parties

6. new toys

Bebe is still a toy taster and teether, sometimes managing to gnaw layers off, so it’s been a challenge with plastic toys. Recently we’ve been happy to discover some great wooden toymakers who were still in our modest price range.

Found these sets on etsy

justhatched - woodland creatures set justhatched - neighborhood set
justhatched - woodland bears set

(from Just Hatched – made in Indiana)

and these while I was working at the VA Ren Faire

uswoodtoys - nesting house uswoodtoys - cow and sheep

(from Unexpected Surprises – made in Maryland).

7. friend’s toy trucks

we like big trucks

Of course we still love big trucks, especially big Tonka trucks.

8. summer drives

Love the sunny green.

9. working on a summer quilt

Bebe loves the colors. The strips have been sewn together and cut again, now I’m working on the squares: eight 9-squares done, many more to go.

Still going as slow as a snail – because I’m slow, not because there’s any hand-sewing. If I were hand sewing, this project would actually be “Working on Next Summer’s Quilt” or even “The Summer After Next.”

10. this silly boy

Hope you have a lovely weekend.

Lovely World

Wonderful memories. Time does slip away so quickly sometimes. I see your little boy and remember when my daughter was that small – she is now 10 years old!

Its the little things right? I love Shenandoah. If I lived some place else that area tops the list. Love the pictures, can’t wait to see what the quilt looks like.

Weekend Sewing is an AWESOME book. I’ve made a couple of things from it so far. Love the aprons. They felt so retro when I was wearing them. Georgia wore them as a dress one night. Really cute.

i’ve always wanted to hike in the Shenandoahs. and i’ve been itching for that Weekend Sewing book for so long. do you think the Huck pants would work in a knit fabric? i’m looking for a pattern for knit fabric and that would be the perfect excuse to pick up the book.

I think you would love the book, especially the pants – might have to adjust the bum a bit if Henry wears cloth diapers
